Artist Bio
Cara Hanley is an Albany-based artist and illustrator whose work encourages introspection, mindfulness, and emotional connection. Combining watercolor and gouache with classic techniques, she creates symbolic and abstract imagery that explores inner experience and resilience. Drawing from her background in mental health work, her practice is grounded in care, attentiveness, and trauma-aware narrative approaches. At the heart of her work is a commitment to destigmatizing mental health by portraying it as a natural, multifaceted part of human experience. She seeks to challenge conventional views that frame mental health as something to be hidden or fixed, instead offering a perspective rooted in self-acceptance, resilience, and curiosity. Rooted in collaboration, Cara works with local organizations to create accessible art that invites reflection, care, and shared meaning. Cara has a B.A. in art history and psychology from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and an M.A. in social work from the University at Albany.
Artist Statement
I work with watercolor and gouache to explore the subtle and complex landscapes of mental health. My practice centers on abstraction, allowing me to communicate emotions and experiences that transcend verbal articulation. The fluidity of watercolor speaks to vulnerability and the quiet, often imperceptible shifts in mood, while the intensity of gouache reflects moments of clarity and emotional depth. I hope to foster a deeper understanding of the mental and emotional states we navigate daily, and to chalLenge the perception of mental health as something fixed or easily understood. My creative process is instinctive and intuitive, a dialogue between material and emotion. Each piece evolves in response to my own internal landscape, alLowing space for vulnerability, exploration, and transformation. I hope to create works that invite reflection, offering viewers a chance to connect with their own overlooked moments and the quiet intensity of their emotional experiences.
