Artist Statement: The Dark Road Project 2023

My art in general is driven and heavily informed by my interest and studies of the occult. My work is dark, and oftentimes deals with my overwhelming sense of existential dread. The body of work represented by this portfolio is a multimedia installation with performance called “The Dark Road”.

My visual art consists of black and white ink drawings. I work in a figurative comic/ manga style to which I incorporate sigils, signs, symbols, and visual archetypes to explore my struggles with anxiety, love, hate, death, rebirth, inner struggles made manifest exteriorly, societal masks, and individual realities.

My sound art is experimental, utilizing live instruments, electronic sequencing and effects manipulation, field recordings, and voice/ spoken word narration. Most times there are sections that are structured using the languages of rock, metal, or punk that decay into ambient stretches washed over with effects and field recordings.

My writing is exploratory in nature. I enjoy taking fragments of narratives and juxtaposing them together to create a resonance between the elements. They are not always linear or well defined. I often use stylistic devices such as Unreliable Narration, the MacGuffin, and Mise en Abyme.

My video work combines drawing, animation, sound, foley effects, and voiceover. Through this I can explore time, motion, sound, and image and how these elements combine in various ways to achieve unexpected effects.

This body of work is a personal quest for consciousness change. I began the series while on a 3 month artist residency at the Burren College of Art, in Ballyvaughan, Ireland, which ran from January through the end of March 2023.

My primary artistic influences are William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, Robert Anton Wilson, Marjorie Cameron, Jean Girard/ Moebius, Philippe Druillet, David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, Iggy Pop/ The Stooges, Jane’s Addiction, Q Hayashida…
