A word from the artist:

When I think about trying to explain my art, it feels difficult. My paintings emerge more from an organic instinctive place, rather than my mind. I use my art to express my feelings and emotions, therefore making it vulnerable and deeply personal. I find that with each creation I shed a layer of myself, because I find myself constantly moving through the emotions that help me grow as a person and artist. Painting this way is more about the process that it is the finished product.

This may sound like a scary process to some people. For me painting the feelings that arise from trauma can be frightening, but it is also cathartic and healing. And I am still here! I have learned through my art to witness and be grateful for my feelings and not to run away from them.

Of course, I also want to create something that is visually intriguing and beautiful.  Doesn’t every artist want that? But, I feel more connected and whole when I paint from a place of vulnerability.  Painting this way helps me in so many ways. It helps me combat my inner critic, challenge perfectionism, nurtures the young places inside, and helps me heal the darker emotions that are locked inside. When I am making a painting, I try not to judge or question what I am doing.

I am interested in the process of creating art for self discovery and self expression. Art is a non verbal means of expressing oneself when words fail to explain the pain, joy, fear, or sadness that one has experienced. One of my biggest hopes for tonight is that I convey the value in creating art for the process of self awareness and healing.
