Artist Spotlight: Jordan Taylor-Hill

Each month, we will feature one of the talented artists that live and work in The Barn, and share with you their passions, projects, and thoughts on being a part of The Barn.
A conversation with Jordan Taylor-Hill:

What is the medium of art in which you work?

I mostly work through sound and performances like movement or spoken word. This is the 5th year I have been hosting Revolution Radio at 90.9 FM WCDB as well.

Who is your favorite artist/creative placemaker and why?

It’s kind of tough to pick one! I’m listening to some new West Coast stuff right now though, also James Brown, and some Jazz like Miles Davis and Ahmad Jamal – they’re great. The drum and bass has always got to be dope for me. I also grew up on Michael Jackson and really just love live shows. Improv has always been a part of Hip-Hop culture with instruments, vocals, and turntables.

How has your work evolved in the past 5 years?

I started playing Percussion a lot more, mostly Djembe; some bottom on the Djun Djun & Samba, but Im getting a set of Bongos and maybe Cajon. I’ve also been recording and DJing pretty consistently this past year or two, even in West Africa! I’m also always writing.

What is your favorite part about living and working at The Barn?

The Artists! I open my door and see paintings from people who live here. It’s inspiring and different. I’ve also never really had this much space and can dance around!  #LiveWorkInspire

What’s up next for you and your work?

I’ve been performing and am opening for other artists as DJ. I’m doing the radio and am working on a series too so we’ll see. There a fashion show in April that’ll be cool.
