Artist Spotlight: Chair Show’s Tadd Martin

Tuesday, November 14, 2017, By: Casey Polomaine

Long before Albany Barn moved into 56 Second Street (about a half of century before, to be precise!), the historic building was a school known as St. Joseph’s Academy. While most of the building looks much different now, some of the old wooden school desks remain, and they’ve landed in the hands of some of the area’s most talented artists for a special 1-night only exhibition.

Meet our first featured artist, Tadd Martin, and save the date for The Chair Show, December 1st at Nine Pin Cider!

What is your name how are you active in your local arts community?
– My name is Tadd Martin. This is my first project with being involved in the local arts community. I’ve had a ton of fun working on it and hope to continue to be involved in the community by doing more projects like this.
What is your art? Feel free to include your medium, process, goals, inspiration, etc.
– My art is a hand drawn, straight from the brain typography piece. My goal for this piece was to really just let my mind run wild with typography that I enjoyed and really just have fun with it. I don’t usually get to do a lot of physical art outside of my community so I really wanted to enjoy it and use my love of letters and go crazy. I also was inspired to create a piece expressing everything I’ve done in my design career and how I got to where I am today.
What drew you to the chair show and what was the inspiration for your piece?
– I honestly just picked a chair with the smoothest wood to able to let my type flow nicely across the piece. And as I mentioned above I really just wanted to have fun with it and create something expressing my design career/goals and using my love of type. Along with those themes, it also became apparent to me while creating the piece that typically kids drew on/wrote on desks (I know I did), and I thought that was a fun aspect about it too that inspired me to really cover as much as the desk as possible.
Any extra thoughts?
I had a blast working on this and I’m so appreciative that I was asked to submit a piece, I really hope to do more and work within my local community in the future.

Chair Show: Call for Art

Monday, August 28, 2017, By: Casey Polomaine , Tags: | | | |

Debuting at the 6th Annual Fusion on October 20, 2017, the Albany Barn will present the first ever Chair Show.

When the Barn was developed, many artifacts of the original institution, St. Joseph’s Academy, remained.  These artifacts help tell the story of the many lives The Barn lived before it became the arts incubator as we know it today. We have collected over a dozen of the Academy’s original wood and metal desks and are seeking a dozen artists to re-imagine and re-purpose these chairs as pieces of art.

We are seeking 12 artists to take part in the re-visualization of these chairs to help us recreate a St. Joseph’s classroom for 2017. We will be taking creative submissions utilizing any medium and/or style. Creative submissions that push the boundary of the classroom and desktop theme are encouraged! The classroom unveiling will be held as part of Fusion on October 20, 2017, at the Albany Barn. All selected artists will be given a ticket to the event.

Submissions will be accepted by e-mail only to and should include the following:

– E-mail containing “Chair Show” in the subject line

– Body of the e-mail should include a description of the intended design for the chair and should submitted for consideration with title, medium, dimensions, and pricing

– If applicable, please include a sketch of your idea

Submissions will be accepted through Thursday, September 7th .  Artist will be notified by Friday, September 8th . Once accepted, selected artists should send an artist statement and/or bio, and social media handles or page links so we can tag you in event promotions,

-Upon selection, we will have pick up desks either Saturday, September 9th or Monday, September 10th (call (518) 935-4858 to schedule a time) for artists to select and pick up their chairs.

Pieces must be able to be delivered to Albany Barn in ready for display by Thursday, October 12, 2017 to be included in the show.

Artist Kimberly Christie

On August 2nd the reception for our new exhibition “Impressive” took place right here at The Barn. After an evening filled with enjoyment of fine art, networking, and inspiration, we asked some of the amazing artists exhibiting work in our new print making exhibition to tell us a little bit about their work.

Local artist Kimberly Christie had this to say about her art work: “Recollect’ focuses on themes of memory and relationship. Symbolic ceramic sculptures join dreamy relief prints in simplifying the complexities of these ideas. The word ‘symbiosis’ translates to ‘living together’. Ranging from mutually helpful to seemingly unaffected to harmful, these relationships can be divided into three separate categories: mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. Interpersonal relationships can be just as, if not more so, complicated. Nostalgic family photographs that have been digitally altered and veiled by color and image communicate my interpretation of recollection. These concepts are additionally bonded through color, material, and form.”

You can find more of Kimberly’s art or her website
